Prolapse of the vaginal walls or uterus (complete or partial uterovaginal prolapse) is one of the serious problems in gynecology. Among gynecological patients, every third woman is diagnosed with genital prolapse. 40% of women over the age of 50 exhibit some degree of vaginal prolapse. In recent years, the condition has shown noticeable rejuvenation, progresses with age, and reaches its peak during old age.
The causes of vaginal wall and uterine prolapse include:
trauma from childbirth, heavy physical labor, certain chronic illnesses that increase intra-abdominal pressure (such as chronic bronchitis, constipation, etc.), as well as genetic insufficiency of connective tissue (tendons and ligaments).
Symptoms of vaginal wall or uterine prolapse include: the sensation of a foreign body in the vagina, discomfort during sexual intercourse, and in severe cases, urological symptoms (urinary retention) and proctological symptoms (difficulty with defecation) may occur.
Treatment of severe forms of genital prolapse is mainly surgical. Treatment methods are quite effective, especially when there is an individualized approach to the patient – taking into account age, sexual activity, the degree of genital prolapse, and the overall condition of the body.
In cases of stage 3 or 4 vaginal wall prolapse, it is often advisable to use synthetic mesh during surgery, since the local tissues are significantly deficient and need to be replaced with more reliable material. Surgeries using synthetic mesh, when performed as indicated, have high effectiveness and significantly lower recurrence rates.
A separate and serious issue is urinary incontinence. The form of incontinence associated with physical exertion (lifting heavy objects, coughing, sneezing) can be successfully treated surgically. One method of treatment involves reinforcing the urethral sphincter using a sling made from synthetic mesh. This surgery is currently considered the gold standard and has a very high success rate (98%).
