What is Prostatitis?
Prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate gland. It develops when an infection enters the gland.
The infection may spread via the bloodstream (hematogenously) from any existing inflammation in the body, or through the urinary tract via the ascending route.
What Affects Men with Prostatitis?
First and foremost, frequent and painful urination. During prostate inflammation, men experience sharp pain at the beginning and end of urination.
This sensation may sometimes radiate to the tip of the penis. Pain can also be felt in the prostate area, between the legs, and in the tailbone region.
Sometimes, men experience discomfort in the rectum, similar to hemorrhoids.
This is explained by the enlarged prostate pressing on the rectum and promoting congestion in its venous system.
Patients also experience increased body temperature. During a rectal exam, the enlarged prostate is painful. Blood tests show increased leukocytes and an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Urine may become darker and contain leukocytes.
In some cases, urinary retention may occur, requiring catheterization and the release of accumulated urine.
