Yesterday, another unique surgery was performed at Karazanashvili’s Robotic Center. Professor Guram Karazanashvili carried out a ureteral plastic surgery using a mesh wrap to treat a very rare pathology – Ormond’s disease, which had caused a narrowing of the ureters.
To help readers understand what this insidious disease is about, here’s a brief explanation:
The cause of Ormond’s disease is unknown. It begins with a non-suppurative (non-purulent) inflammation of fibrous-fatty tissues in the abdominal cavity, which leads to compression of the abdominal organs and narrowing of tubular structures. This process most severely affects the ureters.
The condition can become so severe that, in many cases, it becomes the cause of the patient’s death. It can lead to renal hypertension and chronic kidney failure. At the same time, compression of large blood vessels may occur, such as the aorta, inferior vena cava, and iliac artery.
In the early stages of the disease, treatment is carried out with hormone therapy and immunosuppressants, but when the compression is pronounced, surgical intervention becomes necessary.
This was exactly the case for the patient on whom Guram Karazanashvili performed a complex and unique surgery. Both ureters were so narrowed that the process of urine excretion was significantly impaired. As already mentioned, if timely surgical treatment had not been performed, the patient would have faced serious complications.
Plastic surgery was performed on both damaged ureters using a mesh wrap, and along their entire length, the ureters were freed, preserved, and their blood supply was restored and protected by wrapping them in the mesh.
The patient is currently feeling well.
In the near future, we will offer you an interview with Mr. Guram Karazanashvili about this surgery.
