Frequent Urination – It May Be Accompanied by Discomfort During Urination or Difficulty Controlling the Bladder

Frequent urination can sometimes indicate urological conditions, although it is often caused by fluid intake before bed.

In medicine, frequent nighttime urination is known as nocturia. Nocturia refers to an increase in nighttime urination to the point where the volume of urine produced at night exceeds that produced during the day. Typically, nocturia is associated with polyuria, or the excessive production of urine. Nocturia most commonly occurs in older men with an enlarged prostate. In such cases, treatment for the prostate is necessary to manage nocturia. Due to age-related anatomical and physiological changes in the lower urinary tract, frequent nighttime urination is directly associated with aging. According to existing statistics, nocturia is observed in:

  • 4% of children aged 7 to 15;
  • 66% of men aged 50 to 59;
  • 91% of those over the age of 80.

Nocturia disrupts sleep, causes chronic fatigue, and reduces productivity. A healthy person may experience similar symptoms if they frequently consume caffeinated drinks (tea, coffee, alcohol) in the evening, which have diuretic effects. Experts note that getting up once during the night to urinate is normal, but if you wake up more than once, it could be a sign of kidney disease, and you should consult a doctor.

Frequent Urination – A Significant Discomfort

Frequent urination disrupts normal life, interferes with daily activities, and can lead to insomnia or interrupted sleep.

As mentioned earlier, increased urination (pollakiuria) is a common symptom of various urological conditions in both men and women. The main factors leading to frequent urination are directly linked to dysfunctions of the urinary system and infectious diseases.

Diseases that cause frequent urination:

  • Bladder infection
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia)
  • Presence of stones in the lower urinary tract

If frequent urination is accompanied by any of the following symptoms, you should immediately consult a urologist:

  • Pain when the urge to urinate arises
  • Severe itching in the perineal area
  • Burning sensation
  • Foul-smelling urine
  • Presence of mucus, blood, or pus in the urine

“Karazanashvili Robotic Center” offers treatment for urological diseases in accordance with European standards.
