Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland, which often occurs in women after childbirth. Inflammation of the mammary gland manifests within two weeks after delivery.
Causes of mastitis development – the main cause of mastitis is milk stasis in the mammary gland and its incomplete emptying. During the breastfeeding process, cracks and small wounds often form, which serve as entry points for infection. Under such conditions, the microbes that enter reach the gland through lymphatic and milk ducts and cause an inflammatory process there.
Symptoms of mastitis:
A red and swollen area on the breast, which may be painful to touch;
A hardened area on the breast;
Burning pain in the breast, which may continue or appear only during breastfeeding;
Discharge from the nipple, which may be white or contain traces of blood.
Complications of mastitis may cause serious diseases such as: lymphadenitis, phlegmon, sepsis, gangrene of the mammary glands. The most dangerous forms for the patient are gangrenous and phlegmonous, which are caused by aggravated mastitis.
Risk factor of development – most often mastitis affects breastfeeding mothers who do not follow breastfeeding rules and do not protect themselves from cold exposure. A woman who has already had mastitis once has a high chance of developing this disease again in the future.
In case of mastitis exacerbation, обязательно consult a mammologist!
