Colposcopy is an examination of the vagina and cervix using a special microscope called a colposcope. A colposcope is an endoscopic instrument that allows the doctor to closely observe the cervix and detect any existing abnormalities.
It is recommended to perform a Pap smear (Papanicolaou test) alongside colposcopy. This test involves collecting a sample from the vaginal area. The combination of both tests provides the most accurate results.
If a pathology is detected during the colposcopy, the doctor may take a small tissue sample from the abnormal area to perform a biopsy (targeted biopsy). The final diagnosis is made based on the results of the morphological (histological) examination of this sample. Treatment tactics are determined according to these findings.
Colposcopy can detect:
- Precancerous conditions
- Cervical cancer
- Condylomas (genital warts)
- Keratosis (leukoplakia)
- Erosion
- Inflammation
- Atrophy
- Deciduosis
- Polyps
